The Hawes Family Cemetery is located off the Owensboro-Yelvington Road, Hwy 405, near the village of Yelvington, Daviess Co., Kentucky, ten miles east of Owensboro. In this cemetery are Richard Hawes and his wife Clary Walker Hawes with five of their eleven children, their spouses, many of their children and grandchildren, and as many as six generations of descendants.

Richard Hawes II (1797-1877) their third child was the second Confederate Governor of Kentucky (1862-1865) and was a Representative to the U.S. Congress from 1837-1841. His younger brother Albert Gallatin Hawes was a Representative to the U.S. Congress from 1831-1837 and is buried in the cemetery.

During the Civil War several Hawes descendants were C.S.A. soldiers. Buried in the cemetery are Richard Hawes, son of Edwin and Cary Ann Trotter Hawes; and Robert Walker Taylor, son of Jonathan Gibson and Susan Elizabeth Hawes Taylor. Richard and Robert were both captured and incarcerated at Camp Douglas Prison, Illinois. Jonathan Gibson Taylor Jr., brother of Robert Walker Taylor, died at Rock Island Prison on Oct 1864. Notre Dame University has a wonderful website detailing their service and letters written home to family.

This website displays a cemetery map and a cemetery registry with links to the individuals, their tombstone pictures, and information on each person buried in the Hawes Family Cemetery.

The Hawes Cemetery Map is a scale representation of the actual cemetery from an 1981 survey created by Richard J. Haase, a descendent of Richard and Clary Hawes. The children of Richard and Clary are identified by a black “tombstone” at their site. The family of that child is grouped by color as much as it is possible due to intermarrying between the Hawes cousins. Please turn off any "Pop-Up" Blockers to view the individual links on the map.

A Cemetery Registry was originally created by Susan E. Hawes. An updated version is included containing the more recent additions to the cemetery. Color codes on the registry match those on the cemetery map. Relationships are provided to help understand the family grouping in the cemetery.

To visit the cemetery, generate an Internet map to 8966 Boling Heights Lane, Maceo, Ky. The cemetery is nextdoor.

Hope all who visit enjoy the site. The information herein was created from data provided by descendants of Richard and Clary Hawes. If anyone has additional information or corrections, please contact us.
